Chef Dolores ALlen, She was the big sister who loved to explore the items mom rarely used and cook for her then 2 sisters and one brother. She now has three sisters and 3 brothers. Dolores took cooking classes in middle school and learned recipes like Monkey Bread at the age of 12. Dolores at a young age would also make dishes for family gatherings and tried to perfect them later.
As Dolores grew older, she went to college for business management at Robert Morris University. She wanted to own a business one day. She knew college was important to her and she would be the first out of the family to attend. She attended not close to home and worked full-time at Burger King at the same time. There she learned how to manage, cook and serve customers, as she did while working at McDonald's at the age of 15. She graduated from college in 1995 and started a family with her baby girl, Normesha during the same time. She had a passion for cooking, but knew that a career change was needed to take care of her child.
She began her career in the Energy industry and gained great experience. She later decided that after her daughter turned five years of age, she wanted to explore culinary school. She inspired to learn more skills in the kitchen to work towards the dream of owning a catering business. It took some time for her to begin this journey with the addition of two more little, twins (Nahshon & Nahshona) joined her world. Dolores didn't give up her the dream, but continued to work in the energy field and raising her children.
In 2006, Dolores started on her path to become a Certified Chef at the Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago. She worked hard at a full-time job, raising three children as a single mother and attending school at night. She succeeded and graduated June 2009 and became Chef D Allen. She was very excited about moving forward with her dream. She decided to build her business and move to another state. In August 2009, Chef D moved her family to Houston, Texas. She continued working in the Energy industry while working towards fulfilling her dream. Her journey was a tough one, but with her mentor's, John Cook and Reggie Jones; host of family & friends supporting her and she stayed persistent.
In February 2015, Chef D registered her business, D's Family Kitchen. During this time, she reached out to many homeless shelters to become a sponsor and found one, The Life Center Houston. Her goal was to provide food and assistance to the center. Chef D started new services and collaborated with other small business owners to provide a one-stop shopping experience for customers. In 2016, Chef D created her new company, Build a Pizza, LLC. It’s a Trademarked company with a Patent Pending. The business began operating during the pandemic in 2020. Her goal is to bring families and the community together with pizza food art with healthier options.
